The Road Not Taken
By Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
Reading this time-honored introspective verse around age 10 and being nearly perfectly immature (kind of like racing a parked car), I gave little thought to all the possibilities life’s decisions would offer, thrusting me at the ‘forks of the road’ in the very near future with results that I’d carry the rest of my life, even to the third and fourth generation.
Close friends, choices of education, occupation and matrimony, church and child-rearing were hurled at me before I saw them coming. As I grew up, grew old and began to grow gray, the mosaic of experience was mingled with truth. A pattern began to emerge. I slowly and painfully began to learn that the God in the book He gave us always got it right.
Since Christ told us there would be few who even found the straight and narrow path, much less stayed on it (or at least tried to), I began to think that the “Road Less Traveled” was none other than that Road that Bunyon described in his famous running allegory, “The Pilgrims Progress”.
And as I learned through many failures and much pain, often self-inflicted, the realization of why Jesus did not say “to those who keep my law perfectly, I will give him the crown of life” became a reality. I was not perfect-but I knew the Perfect! What He says to all 7 churches: “To he who overcomes” Heaven-the end of the straight and narrow road-is reality.
The road is life’s small garden. It’s where we live and move and have our being. There’s a thousand roads. This recording touches but 20 of them. My prayer is that as you travel with me, you will see more clearly “yon light”, maybe not too far in the distance and like me will make the choice to take “The Road Less Traveled”. Surely, it will make ALL the difference.
With much love and devotion to the Lord of the road and you, dear fellow travelers, Kerry Belcher, May 20, 2016.
