Kerry-and-dadDaddy (Just to see you smile) (Close to the Heart Songs, 2016, Kerry Belcher, all rights reserved)

My Dad and Mom were and are the greatest pair of influences for good over my lifetime. When Dad died last year (after being in perfect health for 87 of those) the reminiscing began. This is a series of vignettes of the hundreds of stories I could have offered. I know this will strike a chord with you if you have or had a great Dad. One of my favorite old sayings is “The older I become, the wiser my Father becomes”.

A little boy with two bare feet You held me in the driver’s seat-we plowed the rows and mowed the grass day after summer day then we’d clean up and put on shiny shoes and I’d become a little businessman with you-oh it’s true Chorus
Oh my Daddy, Dear old Daddy (Dear Sweet Daddy) I’ve not seen your twinkling happy eyes in quite a while (repeat first part of the Chorus) Id give a hundred dollars-just to see you smile V2You loved to take me in the woods, to Ginseng, deer hunt-you understood the value of a hard day’s work and a hard day’s play And you loved to hear me pick guitar and sing You always thought I’d be a star someday-you prayed!
Chorus
How I’d love to hear you call my name and talk awhile
Bridge
You read God’s Word to all of us and Morning and Evening we came to trust in God and how the hands of time moved so slow And now I’m following your plan-trying hard to be God’s man, but Dad, it’s so hard to let you go…
V3 We walked up the beach ‘til half past dark-I forgot the flashlight when we started ‘cause I was not afraid when I was with you And while we tripped back to the car, we sang old hymns and thanked the Lord the stars were shining strong and true- just like you
